Some people think the secret to success in Twitter is just to update your account as much as possible to get your message out there as much as possible.

However, in my opinion there is no need, in my experience followers are more likely to stop following you if you constantly tweet about complete rubbish. It come sback to targeting, people don’t want to know about things that aren’t relevant to them.

If someone chooses to follow you on Twitter they want to know about you, they aren’t going to stop following you because you don’t tweet enough, in fact the opposite is more likely.

Less is more – send the right messages at the right times about things that people want to hear. If they use their Twitter on a regular basis, they will see your relevant updates as and when you put them up.

They are more likely to pay attention if they don’t think your tweet is going to be the same old junk. Your tweets will become more interesting if they are more concise, less often.

It came to me in a flurry of inspiration that perhaps companies need to start targeting more specifically.

For example, if you are a retailer, by all means, develop a twitter account for the company as a whole, but also develop regional accounts, so people can access information about their local shops and individual events that may be coming up.

Your main central tweeting can be about company news and the start of sales/new products etc.

Localised tweeting can be for specific stores or areas, opening times, special events, new stores and the like.

In my opinion, people will be more likely to follow you if there is that local connection as well as their favourite brand. On the company website there can be twitter links as part of the store locater function.

Twitter is about targeting the right people, not just everyone. If followers keep gettin posts that are irrelevant to their needs, they are likely to stop following you!

Localising media is the key in all platforms, I don’t see why Twitter should be any different.

It has to be said, there are a lot of interesting people out there and there a lot of people trying to make blogs. (including me)

The thing about blogging is that it has to be interesting, there has to be a reason that people want to read it and keep on a reading it, a ‘come back’ factor if you like. It is all very well promoting your business at customers in general but a blog needs to be targeted as much as any other media. If you want to target the general consumer, use simple language and make the posts fun and light hearted.

Your customers are more likely to revisit your blog if they find your posts interesting and relevant. Don’t bore them with business speak, make it fun and colloquial, pull them in with your charm.

Keep your blog up to date with news and events, post pictures and involve your customers in your discussions. Ask questions and opinions, invite them to particiapte in polls and questionnaires.

It is a two-way thing, an information source for you as well as your customers, They get to know what is going on, you get valuable feedback about what they think and want. It’s free, easy and really effective, if you do it the right way!

I know I maybe need to practice what I preach but theories surrounding social media are new to us all, this is simply my perspective.

Twitter, twitter, twitter. I get it, I really do, but I don’t understand why somebody would want to know when I am walking down the street or what I am eating for lunch…

Personally, I use it as an information source, I have added the companies and people that I am interested in and am quite happy to leave it at that. Breaking News, celebrities, general funny stuff, its great for that.

I really hate all these people who add people just to get followers. If there’s one thing that I understand even less, its why anyone would want to know when someone they don’t even know is eating at that precise moment! Also, if randoms start following me I tend just to ignore them.

As far as PR-ing over Twitter, I hate the constant name dropping – they are your clients, we get it! Just be up front and stop all the sneaking around because it doesn’t work! Use Twitter for something more useful, like monitoring the market and building up a base of followers on your client’s Tweeting activity.

It’s all a bit of a laugh at the moment, but in my opinion some people are completely off the mark with their strategies.
